Here’s a rule of thumb when it comes to make-up. If you have full lips, then downplay their fullness with matte, creamy, or glossy lipstick. As for thin or uneven lips, you can add depth to them with shiny lipstick (not to be confused with glossy lipstick). Lips appear more three-dimension if you put lipstick with shine on them, while fuller lips won’t end up looking like fish lips with matte or pigmented lipstick. Remember, reflective balm makeup for thin lips, and cream or glossy lipstick for full lips. If you’re wearing an intense red lipstick, you can downplay the intensity with a bit of sheen or polish to your make-up tool. At any rate, the difference between lipstick gloss and shine is by level of sleekness; gloss is only a little shiny, while shiny lipstick pulls out all stops when it comes to being lustrous.

Did You Know That Your Make-Up Can Be Infected with Germs?

  • While it is important to balance out your look so that you won’t look like a clown or end up with make-up so light, it looks like you didn’t put on any at all (you should achieve a balance between the two extremes, although whether you should favor one or the other depends on what sort of occasion you’re attending or circumstance you’re facing), you should also be careful when it comes to the cleanliness of your make-up kit. Don’t leave your tools moist in your own saliva and sweat, plus you should never use them with a dirty mouth or face.
  • Your mascara is particularly susceptible when it comes to becoming laced with microbial organisms and bad bacteria. The International Journal of Cosmetic Science itself can vouch for the fact that make-up kits do tend to become a petri dish of nastiness if you’re not careful or clean when it comes to using your tools. To be more specific, two Brazilian universities conducted research that tested forty mascara samples from real women. A whopping 79% (that is, most of the women) had staph bacteria lurking in the mascara.
  • Mascara can become a medium for bacteria because it’s moist in and of itself and when stored, it serves as a dark environment wherein microorganisms can proliferate and flourish unimpeded. Expired mascara is particularly vulnerable to disease-spreading germs. The unfortunate thing about mascara is that most budget-conscious women would still keep on using a tube of the stuff even after the three-month mark, when it’s already long-expired and should be sent to the trash bin instead of your face.
  • Using past-its-prime mascara is a hazard of sorts because you’re just asking for trouble by using them. However, it’s not as if you can finish off a tube of mascara for three months unless you’re some sort of airline stewardess or clerk at the bank that’s required to put on make-up day-in and day-out. No strapped-for-cash woman would want to throw away a half-full tube of “perfectly usable” mascara, unaware that doing so will put them into risk of staph infections, rashes, allergic reactions, pimples, and so forth. Also, don’t forget that the eyes are particularly susceptible to infection.
  • Expired eye make -up should be thrown away as soon as possible because you might end up with even graver dermatological sicknesses in the long run if you insist on being so curmudgeonly and miserly. Don’t be a female version of Ebenezer Scrooge, because you’ll only be shooting yourself in the foot by being so unhygienic with your make-up use. More to the point, using mascara that’s older than three months can inflame your skin or even cause significant damage to it, such that you might need plastic surgery to fix it.

Earrings, like clothes, need to be suited to the wearer. If you’re an earring-wearing woman you know that a pair of earrings makes you feel simply wonderful, and simply upgrades every outfit instantly. Well, if you know which kind of earrings you should be wearing; there is no reason why every pair of earrings shouldn’t make you feel that way…

I think earrings are a fantastic way of adding a special edge to an outfit. In the same way that clothes should be matched to your body shape and size, earrings should be worn according to your face shape and skin tone.

Face Shape

In order to figure out what shape your face is, pull back your hair from your face and look at the shape your face, unadorned with hair, is. The most common facial shapes are round, oval, square, heart-shaped, rectangular, diamond-shaped and pear-shaped. Once you know what shape your face is you are one step closer to choosing the right pair of earrings.

Round faces are best paired with long, dangly earrings that both create movement and introduce straight lines which work well with your face. Additionally, small studs that sparkle, and pearls will also work well with your particular face shape.

Oval faces are pretty much mathematically perfect being 1.5 times as long as they are wide and with a forehead that is slightly wider than the jaw. Oval faces are lucky in that they pull off just about any kind of earring- hoops, chandeliers, anything. Square faces have a square jawline and may also have a square-shaped hairline. Earrings that have a softening effect on the face work best for you such as hoops, large, round earrings and cascade earrings.

Heart-shaped faces have wide temples and narrow jawlines and earrings can help make the jawline appear slightly fuller- choose larger earrings, medium-sized hoops or earrings that flare at the bottom.

Rectangular faces have square chins and hairlines and long, narrow faces. As with square faces, you should use earrings to round the face by selecting rounded earrings. Also, one can shorten a rectangular face by wearing large, chunky earrings. Diamond faces have wide cheekbones and narrow foreheads and chins. They should select earrings that are similar to the kind that heart-shaped faces should choose. Long, dangly earrings with flares at the end are a good choice as they play up your cheekbones while balancing out your chin.

Pear-shaped face- narrow foreheads and the widest point is the jawline with a rounded chin. Earrings with more width at the top rather than the bottom are best for you and clip-ons and small studs are also a good choice.

Skin Tone

Skin tones are either warm or cool- warm skin tones are those with yellow, peach or red undertones and cool skin tones have a pink tone, blue undertone with dark skin, blue undertones with fair skin, as well as milky white. Ivory-colored skin with yellow undertones, dark skin with yellow undertones and fair skin with ivory undertones are considered warm.

Those with cool skin tones suit silver, pewter, true primary colors, white and black whereas whose with warm skin tones suit gold, brass, copper, pastels, oranges, earth tones. Universal colors that work for both skin tones are soft white, watermelon; coral colors and light warn aqua.

Well, I hope these pointers have given you more of a direction for when you go shopping for your next set of earrings- good luck in finding the perfect earrings that give you and your outfit the ultimate boost!

1. Preparation is important

As when shopping for anything, it is important to prepare yourself, firstly so you don’t get overwhelmed with the amount of choice you have and secondly so you don’t end up buying something you don’t really like or want.

It may sound silly, but it’s actually a really good idea to go fragrance shopping armed with a pen and notepad. There are so many perfumes available, there’s no way you’ll remember every single one you’ve tried, hated or loved. Therefore why not take notes and make a favoured list as you try them out? It also helps to have a list prepared in advance of perfumes you think you want to try, as this helps you maintain focus.

2. Don’t spray yourself with scent before going fragrance shopping

If you have a plan to go out and buy new perfume, the worst thing you can do is spray yourself with a perfume you already have, as this will just mean the scent you’re wearing will interfere with any others you spray on top. The same goes for body lotions and shower gels, as your body will have absorbed these and the scents will skew anything you try and smell whilst out shopping.

3. Take your time

This tip makes it sound as if choosing a fragrance is the most important decision of your life. But whilst choosing a perfume isn’t all that important, if you want to choose the right one, this tip needs to be followed. Too often do salespeople rush us into making quick decisions and too often does this result in us making the wrong choice.

Take your time as you go round choosing scents to try. Read the back of the boxes and study the ingredients and what the description says about the fragrance before spraying it on you or a perfume card. When you smell, make sure the perfume is dry since the smell will differ between being wet and dry.

4. Remember to label your sample perfume cards/ blotters

Tip 4 goes hand in hand with tips 1 and 3 since it requires you labelling your perfume cards so you don’t forget which perfumes you’ve smelt and liked (or hated) and also taking these cards away from the store to give yourself time to make the right decision.

It’s good to compare the scents on your body and cards after a few hours, as smells develop and what you thought you liked in store, you may actually now hate. It is also good to smell these scents away from the fragrance store, since you will never be able to get an accurate idea of what the scent is like inside a store where hundreds of other people are spraying and testing other perfumes.

5. Remember to take samples!

Any store should be willing to provide you with samples, provided you’re not asking for hundreds. If they want to make a sale, they will see no harm in giving you the samples you require, so if you are in any doubt, just ask for a sample. Then, you can take your samples home and test them in your own time and really get a good idea of which scents you really like and want to buy.
